I love this time of the year. There is a crispness in the air and an undeniable hustle and bustle happening everywhere.
For some, the hurriedness is the frantic search for the immediate warmth of the indoors, and for others, it’s the by-product of the daily grind and the anticipation of the inevitable holiday frenzy. Whichever category one might fall into, one thing is for certain – everyone can appreciate the benefits of a less hurried, less complicated life, especially in the flurry of the season.
The other night, in an attempt to appreciate the quietude of an evening in and the winding down of a busy day, I was mindlessly flipping through the channels on my television when I happened upon a made for television Christmas movie on the Lifetime Channel. The main character was the owner of a coffee shop who unexpectedly discovers that she has a knack for solving local murders. At first glance, the plot seemed implausible and fantastically clichéd, but for some reason, I kept watching. What I soon realized was that there was something genuinely familiar about the setting of the story, or more specifically, the coffee shop venue. I was compelled to ask myself, “why did the coffee shop backdrop feel so familiar to me?”. As I sat comfortably on my couch contemplating this question, I quickly recognized that the answer was simple. Heck, it was downright obvious, a no brainer. What I am referring to of course, is the universal notion that everyone can relate to a good cup of joe and a tasty pastry over genial conversation.
The following day, as I ruminated over the movie I had watched the night before, I couldn’t help but think about the popularity of the coffee shop culture as it exists today. Realistically, all one needs to do is count the number of coffee shops in operation in and around any major city to confirm the veracity of this phenomenon. This coffee shop phenomenon, or trend, as I like to call it, has generated a diverse and colourful customer base. On any given day, your local coffee shop serves as the destination for all kinds of people and possible interactions, including, the business person meeting with a client, the writer in the midst of his or her great creation, friends catching up, families enjoying time together, the dating couple on their first date, the list goes on and on…
I personally can attest to the popularity and convenience of the coffee shop trend for the mere fact that since opening Foothills Law over seven years ago, I have consistently and frequently conducted business transactions with my clients in many of the coffee shops scattered throughout the city.
I have come to appreciate the simplicity and ease of meeting with my clients in this mobile office format and expect to continue using the coffee shop setting for as long as the demand for this mobile service exists.
In the midst of the chaos of our daily lives, expediency and efficiency are imperative and the coffee shop trend uniquely serves up the solution we all seek in this remarkably hectic time. Simply stated, the coffee shop solution offers a whole latte convenience.
